So, we haven’t really had much of a chance to write any posts, that tends to happen when you’re in bed by nine PM and are surprised if you manage to sleep until seven AM.
We think we may have navigated Samuel’s first growth sprut. Correction, I managed to bumble through a few extra nappy changes in the middle of the night whilst Ali bore the brunt of a demanding little boy who wanted to eat every two hours and wouldn’t settle.
Poor Ali had three days of muddling around with vomit on her clothes, not sleeping and generally being at the service of Sam, who just couldn’t settle down.
Most of the guides we were given said that newborns cry on average for about two hours every day and while we thought we were lucky with our little man, he definitely kept up to pace for a few days there. I had been back at work for a few weeks and don’t think I’ve ever seen Ali look more relieved when I’ve walked in the door. Anyone who’s been through a few days of a sick baby or one that won’t settle will know what it’s like when you’re at the end of your rope, there’s nothing quite like feeling your baby finally drop off on your shoulder while you’re taking them for a walk round the block.
Growth spurts aside, Sam is becoming more and more aware of his surroundings by the day. We’re lucky enough to be able to play for a while occasionally after a feed and he is able to hold his gaze longer and longer. You also get the feeling he fights going to sleep sometimes because he wants to stay up and play.
So besides all that, over the last few weeks Sam and I have been hanging out a bit more… I was going to play Star Wars for him yesterday but for some reason he fell asleep. He’s getting really good at looking round the room and trying to find where mummy has gone when she walks into the next room. Sam is also getting very good at saving up massive poos for me to clean up when it’s my turn to change him.

i’m telling you guys i would have those early days back any time and i would appreciate them more, even covered in excretions. I remember a shower spray was more helpful than wipes! One holding one cleaning.

Thanks Jan, needed a laugh. We’re both loving the getting to know you time with our little man, even if it means poo explosions and marathon feeding sessions!
